Caring for Your Anodized Titanium Jewelry

Caring for Your Anodized Titanium Jewelry

Several people have asked us recently how to care for anodized titanium jewelry. Anodizing titanium generates oxidation on the metal surface, bringing out the metal’s brilliant colors without using patinas, dyes, or chemicals. The color changes depending on the amount of oxidation. The concern is how well the jewelry wears and whether the colors will fade over time.

According to jewelry designer Stefan Alexandres, who has been working with anodized titanium for eight years, the anodized surface is very stable and indoor or outdoor elements will not affect the finish. However, similar to a buffing wheel, friction with the body through every day use may wear out the anodized area over time.

The problem is common to any process that changes the natural color of the metal, such as oxidized sterling silver or gold plated metal. Rings pose the biggest risk because they are exposed to constant friction between the fingers. The problem is not as great for other kinds of jewelry, such as pendants or earrings.

To prevent the anodized color from fading gently wipe the piece with a clean cloth after you wear it and store it in a plastic bag as a precaution to reduce exposure to the elements. Try to avoid contact with harsh chemicals, like hairspray, perfume, bleach or chlorinated water – even sweat. Harsh chemicals or abrasives may harm the anodized layers.

When the time comes to clean your titanium jewelry, don’t use polishes or cloths with abrasives and never use an ultrasonic cleaner. Bathe your jewelry in warm, soapy water with a mild detergent (like Dove) for a few minutes, rinse well and pat or air dry. If care is taken you should not have to clean your jewelry more than twice a year.

Like all jewelry, nicks or scratches may chip the color and expose the titanium metal underneath. If the anodized area is protected in its own carved cavity it will be less likely to chip (see Stefan Alexandres’ unique rings Fetching and Earnestly).

The bottom line is that anodized titanium is very durable against the elements but not against friction or scratches -- just like many other kinds of finishes. With proper care, your anodized titanium jewelry should last a lifetime.
