How to Clean Your Gold and Silver Jewelry

Posted by John Speaks and Keiko Mita on on 14th Apr 2026

Many people ask us how to clean jewelry. The short answer is “it depends”. The type of metal and the presence or absence of gemstones make a difference. But don’t overthink it. There are all sorts of methods out there, some harmful, others long and complicated – we like to keep it simple. The tips below apply to gold and silver jewelry and easily can be done at home.

Gold Jewelry

  1. Prepare a solution of lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Soak jewelry to loosen dirt and excess oil.
  3. Gently brush with a soft toothbrush, paying special attention to crevices behind stones.
  4. Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm running water.
  5. Pat dry and buff with a soft microfiber cloth.

Silver Jewelry

There are many ways to clean silver, but we prefer the simplest: commercial two‑step polishing cloths.

  1. Use a polishing cloth to remove tarnish and brighten the surface. Avoid rubbing gemstones.
  2. Finish by buffing with a soft cloth for a clean, gleaming shine.

(We prefer products that come with two cloths, one for polishing and one for buffing)

Patina (Oxidized) Silver Jewelry

  1. Prepare a solution of lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Soak jewelry briefly to loosen dirt.
  3. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and gently wipe the jewelry.
  4. Rinse quickly under lukewarm running water.
  5. Pat dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

A Few Final Tips

Treat your jewelry like a baby — it’s delicate. Please avoid harsh cleaners and boiling water. Always clean your jewelry over a sealed sink with a container or small bucket underneath. We definitely don’t want you to lose a precious piece down the drain.
