Vivasmith Biography
“For us inspiration is everywhere, people, nature, feelings, a random conversation, rain drops on a windshield” (from electric artisans interview)
Vivasmith stands for the last names of its founders, Deborah Vivas and Melissa J. Smith. It means forgers of life - perfect for the couple, as Debra carves her way with metals and Melissa facets her way with gemstones.
Deborah is a multidisciplinary designer with a background in architecture. Her dynamic international experience – living and creating jewelry in Venezuela, Mexico and the United States before settling in Canada – inspired respect for global landscapes and local environments. She approaches her designs through order, color and form. Her current work fuses fine gold and fine silver to mild steel, creating unique patterns and textures in each piece.
Melissa is a Graduate Gemologist from the GIA. She is passionate about gemstones and approaches her faceting by bringing out the natural beauty of each stone. Whenever possible she showcases a gem’s inclusions, which she believes adds beauty and character to the design.
Deborah and Melissa are both dedicated to sustainability in their studio and believe that playful and interesting jewelry does not need to sacrifice elegance or ethics. Each piece reflects a commitment to finding balance with the environment that provides our resources.
